Introducing the MB994IPO-3SB, a rugged full metal dual bay 2.5” SATA/SAS hard drive / SSD mobile rack backplane designed with a Slim Optical Disk Drive (ODD) slot for use in a single external 5.25” bay. It is a device designed with a rugged full metal build commercially designed for: Medical & Military systems, Media servers, IPCs, HTPC, and All-In-One computers, approved & used by Tier 1 companies. Dual 4-pin power connectors are used to ensure secured and consistent power supply to both drives and ODD, whether they are low power consumption 2.5” SATA SSD’s or power hungry 15000 RPM 2.5” SAS drives. Also included is a single 40mm cooling fan with on & off switch to assist the drives running at their optimal temperatures, in even the most intense applications.
Maximize Space-Efficiency
The high-density design of ToughArmor MB994IPO-3SB packs two full-height 2.5" SSD/HDD hot-swap bays and one Slim/CD/DVD/Blu-ray ROM optical disk drive into a single 5.25" drive bay, perfect for space-sensitive applications such as powerhouse PC, portable military workstation, and rackmount industrial PC.
Versatility is the Key
The MB994IPO-3SB separates itself from the rest of the MB994 series by the unique Slim Optical Disk Drive slot that is available. The Slim ODD slot uses our EZ-ODD Tray made of rugged full metal, and is easily removable by use of the provided key or via a side latch. This allows system integrators more freedom to better meet their potential client’s needs. The EZ-ODD Tray is compatible with any standard Slim Optical Disk Drive with 12.7mm height.

The MB994IPO-3SB utilizes our EZ Slide Mini Trays, making drive interchangeability and maintenance completely hassle free. The trays are built using rugged full metal so that they are durable for many lifetimes, while will not weigh you down when transporting your data from system to system. Also featuring a full cage design, the added top drive cover provides added layer of protection while moving the drive. The 2.5" HDD trays are designed to accommodate 5mm, 7mm, 9.5mm, 12.5mm & 15mm 2.5" SAS/ SATA SSD/HDD drives, giving you excellent control of your 2.5" hot swap backplane.
Fan control further allows the potential system to be accommodated properly depending on the hard drives used. If a SSD is used, fan can be left off and shut off the noise completely from the MB994IPO-3SB. Otherwise, the fan is a great asset to assist in cooling mission critical hard drives.
Excellent Build Quality
The MB994IPO-3SB body is built with aluminum to be able to hold up in the toughest of conditions, provide excellent heat dissipation, and shave as much weight as possible. Included ventilation slots on the front and back for maximum airflow to keep your drives running cool, and an LED is placed on the front of each drive tray to give the user drive status at all times. With the Rugged Full Metal design, the ToughArmor is perfect for industrial and medical devices that may require a flammability rating as the full metal material is considered to already compliant with flammability requirements.
In the Smallest Package Possible
Utilizing its small form factor, the MB994IPO-3SB is perfect for use in gaming PCs, HTPC, small form factor cases with limited external 5.25” expansion bays, or a Slim ODD and hard drives are needed. SMB’s, SI and power users all benefit from the most features, in the smallest form factor possible.

Prevent Server Drive Ejection From User Error with ToughArmor MB994SK-1B
When working with workstations, databases, and/or servers that requires front-loading, sometimes hard drives may be accidentally ejected by an inadvertent push of the eject button. This can cause failures to the system. With the ToughArmor MB994SK-1B 4 x 2.5" SATA/SAS HDD/SSD Full Metal Mobile Rack with Key Lock, the additional security lock on each drive tray not only protects the hard drive from being easily stolen, it also prevents accidental drive ejections that lead to system crashes. But you already have a MB994SP-4S, MB994SP-4SB-1, or MB994IPO-3SB and want a lock for preventative measures? Simply obtain the EZ Slide Mini Tray MB994TK-B and slide it into your MB994 series products and you now have extra protection for your hard drives!

"Overall, we were very impressed with the oddly named Icy Dock MB994IPO-3SB. For users looking to store large amounts of data into a small HTPC or desktop, the MB994IPO-3SB is a very attractive option. As we stated earlier in this review, this Icy Dock unit is a great option for enthusiasts looking to expand capabilities in their workstations as well as for servers, both small and large. The biggest advantage of the MB994IPO-3SB is not so much its performance potential but its ability to get three things in a slot in a product that normally only has room for one: a slim optical drive caddy and two 2.5″ SAS drives/SSDs. Another big plus for this device is that it offers front access, which is a nice change from having to open your case to access additional drives."

"The Icy Dock MB994IPO-3SB is a really cool product. Here’s the basic idea – take a standard 5.25″ optical drive bay and make it more useful. Useful in the sense that it allows one to still use the 5.25" space for an optical drive, but also allows one to add two 2.5"SAS drives or SSDs in the same space. With notebooks being the primary market for the consumer space, slim optical drives are readily available and priced very reasonably. The 2.5″ form factor is gaining in popularity. 2.5"is the typical SSD size and 2.5" SAS drives tend to have better random I/O performance than their 3.5"counterparts due to geometries. From a state of technology today perspective, the Icy Dock MB994IPO-3SB allows one to take advantage of new technology trends and make a standard server or workstation chassis more useful. Let’s take a look at the unit.."

"The Icy Dock MB994IPO-3SB opens up small form factor systems to more storage without ODD sacrifice. The MB994IPO-3SB combines two 2.5" HDD racks and a slim ODD bay in a single 5.25" bay configuration. The MB994IPO-3SB uses a full aluminum metal construction. The HDD bays support SAS 2.0 and SATA III drives. Icy Dock installed a 40mm cooling fan on the rear that uses an on/off switch and features active power technology. The fan will only run when a drive is installed. The MB994IPO-3SB is powered by two Molex connections. Installed on the front are status LED indicators for each drive."

"Naming choice aside, there is nothing to complain about when it comes to the ICY DOCK MB994IPO-3SB. It delivers on quality, ease of use, and quiet operation. If you want to stuff large amounts of storage into a small HTPC or even expand your desktop system, the MB994IPO-3SB should be at the top of your list for consideration."

"For me, the MB994IPO-3SB is a home run. It meets my needs as a micro-ATX gamer and I feel it would be an excellent addition to users in the home-theater PC and SFF markets as well. With SSD prices plummeting in recent months and 1TB 2.5” HDDs readily available, this is one of the best choices for maximum utility in a minimum package."

Frequent Asked Questions

Q: The mounting screws for the device seem to be too short to secure the device onto my system, what should I do?

A: For computer cases that have a thick metal sheet, the included mounting screws (M3*2.5L) may not fully secure the device. Please use longer screws (M3*4L) to secure the device or contact us at for replacement screws.

Q: I feel that the drive tray's upper and lower metal spring is stuck when inserting the drive tray. What should I do?
A: Remove the drive tray from the enclosure and reinsert the tray without putting excessive pressure on the metal mesh sheet in front of the tray. Excessive force on the front metal mesh sheet may bend the top and bottom metal spring, causing difficulties when inserting the drive tray. Therefore, please do not forcingly insert the drive tray when this happens as it may cause damage to the metal spring.
