Every year, technology is able to become more and more advanced and is constantly improving. Also, with being physically the smallest, and performing the best is the end goal of any storage system. This is why SFF (Small Form Factor) storage systems are becoming more popular due to its low power consumption and space-saving benefits. With the advent of recent solid state technology, this allows 2.5” SSD’s to easily achieve 500MB/sec in transfer rate, which overcomes the 3.5” SATA hard drives in every category except capacity. Therefore, maximize the capacity in a limited space becomes the most important task that many storage consulting firms are faced with often. For SFF systems, we introduce the Icy Dock MB992SK-B 2.5" SATA Mobile Rack solution for use in 3.5" device bays (Floppy bay). Suggested applications in Medical & Military systems, Media servers, and IPCs, approved by Tier 1 companies for the rugged full metal construction used.
Complete Space Saver
Utilizing its small form factor, The MB992SK-B is perfect for use in industrial PCs, SMB SFF servers, mobile DVR systems, or even home servers. The ability to house 2 x SATA SSD or HDD in a single 3.5” bay makes it a valuable asset, such as, building small RAID 1 backups for SMB workstation or fast RAID 0 arrays for powerful personal computer. To keep cables from cluttering, a single SATA 15 power pin is used to ease installation. Save as much as space while maintaining the speed and capacity, which is the beauty of the MB992SK-B.
Protect your Investments
Making sure your drives are in good hands and lasting as much as possible is carefully considered in any enterprise build and design. The MB992SK-B is capable of holding up in the harshest environments, with the rugged heavy duty metal construction in the entirety of the body and its smaller components. It can be used various systems including: military and law enforcement deployment, as well as manufacturing conditions such as embedded control systems and factory automation systems. With the rugged Full Metal design, the ToughArmor is perfect for industrial and medical devices that may require a flammability rating as the full metal material is considered to be already compliant with flammability requirements.
The metal material used grants heat dissipation transfer from the hard drives to the mobile rack. Multi-Flow Technology (MFT) effectively routes air flow correctly for excellent passive cooling, via ventilation slots on the front, rear, top and bottom (in multiple locations). Lastly, Anti-Vibration Technology (AVT) and EMI Grounding are used to provide a stable environment for the hard drives or SSD’s used to perform at its best.
Versatile Utility & Security
Bringing more utility your hard drives, a LED is installed into the front of the mobile rack to provide drive status information at all times. Active Power Technology (APT) allows each LED to be on only when a hard drive is inserted into the enclosure. For drive security, the eagle-hook lock system on the tray makes sure your hard drives will not eject when not needed. Additionally, the 2 segment key lock provides extra protection to theft of hard drives as well as safeguards any sensitive data.
The brand new EZ Slide Micro trays make drive interchangeability and maintenance completely hassle free. The trays are also designed to accommodate 5mm to 9.5mm height hard drive and SSD, creating a 2.5" hot swap bay for any standard SATA hard drives and SSDs.
To access your data outside of your system or in a remote location, the ToughArmor MB991U3-1SB is the way to go about. The drive tray slot of MB991U3-1SB is compatible with a variety of ToughArmor drive trays including the ToughArmor MB991, MB992, MB994, MB996 and MB998 series. This allows existing ToughArmor users to access their internal drive externally without opening up the case. It is a great tool for an individual drive diagnostic test. If you need to do a safe data erase or just simply expending system storage capacity, just remove the tray from the internal ToughArmor unit and insert it in the MB991U3-1SB to perform individual tasks externally with USB 3.0 interface. Best of all, the MB991U3-1SB uses USB bus-powered and it does not require a power adapter to operate. Simply connect the USB cable to any system and you are ready to go.

"The ICY DOCK MB992SK-B is a SATA backplane cage offers solid aluminum construction that not only protects the hard drives but provides passive cooling. The MB992SK-B is setup with two locking drive bays that will fit 2.5” SSDs or HDDs. The case fits into the space of an external 3.5” drive bay, allowing you to run RAID 0 or RAID 1 configurations in a limited amount of space. Both drives in this case are powered from a single 15-Pin SATA cable and individual SATA data cables."
"If you are looking for the most number of drives in the least amount of space, the MB996 is fantastic option. It’s sister drive, the MB992, is a pretty slick companion letting you potentially fit a removable RAID configuration in an otherwise-overlooked 3.5” slot."
"In terms of build quality and design the MB992SK-B is built solidly with the Aluminium and SECC structure feeling robust. Each drive bay is easy to remove and install with all the bundled items we need included in the box.
If we were to change one aspect of the design it would be to go tool free for the drive brackets, just to make installation as easy as it could possibly be but in reality four screws isn't a lot of work.
As the graph shows there is minimal impact from using the Icy Dock product, in fact it is fair to say the differences in scores are very much down to the margin of error between test runs. Great news for those looking at maximum performance from the enclosure."
How to customize and optimize a computer forensic workstation with CASELAB's Merlin SM8 and ICY DOCK's SSD/HDD high density storage kits for intensive digital forensic data analysis?
Q: Does MB992SK-B support the new SATA 3.3 Power Disable feature (PWDIS)?
A: The MB992SK-B does not support the SATA 3.3 PWDIS feature. If you install the SATA HDD/SSD with PWDIS in MB992SK-B, the drive will not spin, and the system won't detect the drive. See the list below for known SATA HDD/SSD with the PWDIS feature.
Known SATA HDD/SSD with Power Disable Feature (PWDIS)
Note: the SAS hard drive or SSD does not use the Pin 3 of SATA power connector for PWDIS feature and compatible with MB992SK-B.
While we recommend to avoid using the SATA HDD/SSD with PWDIS, you can use the methods below to disable the PWDIS feature physically if you already purchased the drive:
Method 1 – Using the Molex to SATA adapter or cable to disconnect the power to Pin 3 of the SATA power connector.
Molex to SATA Adapter
Molex to SATA Cable
Method 2 – Placing Kapton tape on Pin 1-3 of the SATA power connector to isolate the 3.3V power, as shown below.
