The EZConvert Air Lite MB482SP-3B SATA 2.5" to 3.5" HDD/SSD converter is specifically designed for builders who prefer to mount their hard drive or SSD with screws for maximum stability. The EZConvert Air Lite MB482SP-3B features a top-free open air design with exceptional cooling and converts any 2.5" SATA HDD/SSDs into an exact 3.5" hard drive form factor. It will also fit 2.5” SAS HDDs to provide single channel SAS functions (requires SAS host for SAS drives). The entire converter is made of robust stainless-steel that is perfect for the most demanding applications. The perforated vents, top-free open air design, and metal construction all work synergistically to keep your drives as cool as possible.
2.5" Drive Support for All 3.5" Bays
SSDs are becoming more common in the average household, but most computer cases still don't have support for 2.5" drives. Since these chassis' don't normally have built in 2.5” SSD/HDD bays, a 2.5” to 3.5” HDD/SSD converter is an absolute necessity when purchasing 2.5” HDDs/SSDs. For enterprise, it’s valuable for upgrading 3.5" HDD file servers to 2.5" HDD/SSD file servers without paying a tremendous amount for an entire system upgrade.
The EZconvert Air Lite MB482SP-3B accepts 2.5" SATA/SAS SSD/HDD of any height from 7mm to 15mm. The bottom mounting screw holes allow you to mount your 2.5" hard drive or SSD firmly into the converter and mount your converter firmly into your chassis with provided screws. Securing your drives in place is critical for rugged system builds.
The EZConvert Air Lite MB482SP-3B has exact 3.5" SATA HDD dimensions and specifications, so it is compatible with any computers, devices, servers and HDD enclosures that support 3.5” SATA or 3.5” SAS hard drive.
The built-in SATA PCB bridge protects your HDD/SSD connector from wearing out during the insertion and removal cycle, and it delivers the full speed of SATA 6Gbps without any speed reduction due to its pass-through design.
Advanced Cooling Design
The foundation of the EZConvert Air Lite stems from it's ability to rapidly cool drives. A top-free open air design quickly disperses heat away from drives by allowing it to 'breathe' instead of fully enclosing it. This is crucial during intense applications and may lead to better performance since it's well known that excessive heat can interfere with your system's ability to perform optimally. We've strategically placed ventilated slots around the converter allowing heat to escape from all sides and angles, while the metal frame acts as a giant heat sink to quickly cool your hard drives. The open air design, ventilated slots, and metal frame combine to produce an advanced cooling system to put your mind at ease.

ICY DOCK EZConvert Air Lite HDD SSD Converter REVIEW

Published on Sept 11, 2017 by Robyn

Make an old hard drive new again with this conversion kit from Icy Dock.

Quite some time ago, I had a Dell desktop tower. At the time, it was intended to be used for basic office-type tasks and some light gaming. Over time, I decided to convert it into more of a media box and I connected it to my television. This was a time when Netflix was still primarily a DVD order company and they weren’t streaming 99% of their inventory. I stored numerous movies on the Dell and finally, I had to upgrade my hard drive for additional storage. A friend of mine had a spare drive, but we discovered that the Dell computer required a special bracket in order for the hard drive to fit into it properly....

Great for iMac upgrades

I wanted to upgrade my iMac (24-inch, Early 2008) by replacing the hard drive with an SSD drive using the instruction on the iFixit web site. The problem is that the iMac is built specifically for the form factor of a 3.5" hard drive. The drive mounts and cable length will not work with an SSD. That is where this awesome ICY Dock comes in handy. It worked perfectly. The SSD seats nicely into the connector and is fixed o the dock with included mounting screws. Now you have a form factor that is perfect for the iMac hardware. The SSD upgrade added capacity, improved overall performance and reduced my boot time from 64 seconds to 30 seconds.

Did what it needed to and cheaply.

Pros: This was very economical and simple to install. The metal was strong enough it did not bend/deflect when installing in a 1st gen Aluminum iMac (to use an SSD). This is important as there is a fair amount of tension on the mount. A competitor's offering didn't come close. The holes allowed the thermal sensor to be threaded through and placed on the drive. This drive also puts the SATA connectors in the "correct" location - hence why it is critical to use a product like this for the iMac.

Cons: Be careful of sharp edges... I'm reaching for straws here but it seems like that's the only way you could have a problem installing it.

Other Thoughts: This sort of device seems a bit hard to screw up... but I've had a lot of trouble with other hard drive adapters. I saw this series specifically recommended on a forum and was very pleased myself with it. I will definitely be a repeat customer if I need another one. The one I used was the "cheaper" version where you have to mount your drive with screws... and it's probably worth saving the money as it ends up being (in theory) more physically secure too.

Well constructed

Have used a few products similar to this to mount SSD into hard drive caddies in servers. This one is well-built and sturdy. The metal is thick. The screw holes line up.

Frequent Asked Questions
Q: Does MB482SP-3B support the new SATA 3.3 Power Disable feature (PWDIS)?

A: The MB482SP-3B does not support the SATA 3.3 PWDIS feature. If you install the SATA HDD/SSD with PWDIS in MB482SP-3B, the drive will not spin, and the system won't detect the drive. See the list below for known SATA HDD/SSD with the PWDIS feature.

Note: the SAS hard drive or SSD does not use the Pin 3 of SATA power connector for PWDIS feature and compatible with MB482SP-3B.

While we recommend to avoid using the SATA HDD/SSD with PWDIS, you can use the methods below to disable the PWDIS feature physically if you already purchased the drive:

Method 1 – Using the Molex to SATA adapter or cable to disconnect the power to Pin 3 of the SATA power connector.

Method 2 – Placing Kapton tape on Pin 1-3 of the SATA power connector to isolate the 3.3V power, as shown below.
