ToughArmor EX MB491SKL-B Industrial Rugged Full Metal 2.5” SATA/SAS HDD & SSD Mobile Rack for External 3.5" Drive Bay with Key Lock & Thumb Screw Design
The ICY DOCK ToughArmor EX MB491SKL-B 2.5” mobile rack is MIL-STD-810G certified and built specifically for military and industrial computing systems that require exceptional drive security. It uses a rugged, heavy-duty metal construction, which is considered to be already compliant with flammability requirements and capable of withstanding the harshest environments. In addition, the metal key lock prevents unauthorized access to your important drives, and the thumb screw lock adds extra protection from impact, reducing drive tray vibration and increasing drive stability during transportation. Furthermore, the removable drive tray design allows the interchangeability between systems.
The ToughArmor MB491SKL-B supports 2.5-inch SAS and SATA hard drives or SSDs at 6Gbps transfer speeds and is backward compatible with 3Gbps drives and hosts. The MB491SKL-B dual-lock mobile rack is an ideal data storage enclosure for enterprise, industrial, in-vehicle, military, and medical applications where reliability and security are critical.
Removable Design with Maximum Protection
The removable drive tray design supports hot-swap and makes maintenance completely hassle free in the event of a hard drive failure. With a simple swap of the hard drive, your overall down time is greatly reduced which is especially useful for time sensitive projects and applications. The trays are designed to accommodate a 5 to 15mm height hard drive or SSD, creating a 2.5” hot swap bay for any standard SATA/SAS drive. While the tray is not installed to the MB491SKL-B, the Anti-Dust Flap helps prevent dust from entering the device.
The metal key lock on the tray prevents unauthorized access to your drive. The unique thumb screw design locks the metal tray into the device to minimize the drive vibration, and to prevent accidental drive tray ejection, providing the ultimate protection for your hard drives or solid-state drives.
The removable drive tray design combined with our dual layer drive security system makes the ToughArmor EX MB491SKL-B a great mobile rack for mobile servers and military grade systems.
Packed with Features
The front of the ToughArmor EX includes a status LED when the drive is powered on, off and accessed. Active Power Technology (APT) allows the status LED to be on only when a hard drive is inserted into the enclosure. We have also included drive ID plugs so users with multiple MB491SKL-B units in their system can give each drive tray a unique ID number.
A Military-grade Durability
Challenging environments require gear that can take a beating and withstand harsh conditions for as long as the situation demands. It takes more than your average SSD/HDD mobile rack enclosure to meet these requirements. The MB491SKL-B 2.5" drive enclosure complies with military standards *MIL-STD-810H 516.8 (Shock) and 514.8 (Vibration)and is built with the full-metal construction for flammability requirements, making MB491SKL-B suitable for even the most demanding applications.
*Note: MIL-STD-810H is the set of methods and test procedures that have governed environmental engineering considerations for aerospace and defense applications for over 60 years.

Rugged Full Metal Mobile Rack Designed for High Shock and Vibration Environments – ToughArmor EX MB491SKL-B & MB492SKL-B
There are many examples of systems being deployed in harsh and rugged environments: off-road vehicles, boats, airborne avionics and mining equipments. There are also some less obvious examples such as water pumping station and refrigeration plant, where the vibration is less extreme but persists over many years. Therefore, the critical question that challenges many system integrators is how to prevent intermittent connection drops and possible disk errors when placed under a stressful condition.
Luckily, the ICY DOCK's ToughArmor EX MB491SKL-B and MB492SKL-B are designed specifically for high shock and unstable environment. They provide dual locks drive tray (metal lock & thumbscrew lock) and featured full metal construction to produce maximum protection against the integrity of your hard drives and data. The removable drive tray design combined with dual layer drive security system makes the ToughArmor EX MB491SKL-B & MB492SKL great mobile racks for mobile servers, military grade systems or any rugged environment.

Frequent Asked Questions
Q: Does MB491SKL-B support the new SATA 3.3 Power Disable feature (PWDIS)?
A: The MB491SKL-B does not support the SATA 3.3 PWDIS feature. If you install the SATA HDD/SSD with PWDIS in MB491SKL-B, the drive will not spin, and the system won't detect the drive. See the list below for known SATA HDD/SSD with the PWDIS feature.
Known SATA HDD/SSD with Power Disable Feature (PWDIS)
Note: the SAS hard drive or SSD does not use the Pin 3 of SATA power connector for PWDIS feature and compatible with MB491SKL-B.
While we recommend to avoid using the SATA HDD/SSD with PWDIS, you can use the methods below to disable the PWDIS feature physically if you already purchased the drive:
Method 1 – Using the Molex to SATA adapter or cable to disconnect the power to Pin 3 of the SATA power connector.
Molex to SATA Adapter
Molex to SATA Cable
Method 2 – Placing Kapton tape on Pin 1-3 of the SATA power connector to isolate the 3.3V power, as shown below.
Q: I feel that the drive tray's upper and lower metal spring is stuck when inserting the drive tray. What should I do?
A: Remove the drive tray from the enclosure and reinsert the tray without putting excessive pressure on the metal mesh sheet in front of the tray. Excessive force on the front metal mesh sheet may bend the top and bottom metal spring, causing difficulties when inserting the drive tray. Therefore, please do not forcingly insert the drive tray when this happens as it may cause damage to the metal spring.
Please DO NOT put excessive pressure on the metal mesh sheet as shown

ICY DOCK ToughArmor EX MB491SKL-B
"This is a really nice enclosure with a limited set of use cases. With a 5.25″ hot swap cage there is room for more drives. We did like the support for thicker drives and the all metal construction. We really liked the thumb screws. The days of slinging 400-1TB SSDs around like ZIP drives of old in 3.5″ bays may be upon us.."
