Introducing ToughArmor MB834M2K-B, the world’s first ruggedized M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD tool-less removable rack. Your M.2 NVMe SSD no longer requires to be installed on a motherboard or a riser card with a tiny screw, but it can now be installed and accessed from the front of your computer without any tools! The ToughArmor MB834M2K-B comes with a patent-pending tool-less M.2 drive installation design which will alleviate the pain that many users experience when installing M.2 drives and offer easy drive maintenance and system upgrading. The ToughArmor MB834M2K-B supports blazing-fast PCIe x4 transfer speed up to 32Gb/s via MiniSAS HD (SFF-8643) and accepts all standard M.2 drives lengths from 30mm to 110mm (2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, 22110). In addition, while working together with numbers of ventilation holes around the enclosure, each drive tray is equipped with a high efficiency aluminum heat sink to ensure all the M.2 NVMe SSDs remains within their optimal temperature even when it is under full load.

Ultimately, your drives will be well protected within this full metal drive enclosure and a barrel key lock to prevent any unauthorized physical access.
 
M.2 Drive is No Longer Hidden
 
 
 
A typical M.2 drive is installed on a motherboard or a riser card and secured by a tiny screw, and it can be a very troublesome and time-consuming process to install or remove the drive physically. However, with ICY DOCK's ToughArmor MB834M2K-B, M.2 drives are brought into the front of a computer case and makes M.2 NVMe SSD installation and removal a more straightforward and efficient process.
 

Note: the host has to support NVMe hot-plug function in order for the OS to detect the swapped drive while the system is powered on. If you are having trouble detecting your M.2 NVMe SSD, please refer to FAQ.

State-of-art Tool-less M.2 Drive Installation

 
M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD drives are most often inserted at a 45-degree angle then screwed down onto the motherboard. When using ToughArmor MB834M2K-B, the user can simply place the M.2 SSD in the drive tray, adjust the drive locker to the correct length per M.2 drive type, and push down the drive to lock in place. The whole process will only take users less than five seconds to complete, avoiding the hassle of tiny, easy-to-lose screws while bringing a more efficient and innovative way in installing M.2 drives.
 
 
Being a truly tool-less drive installation, installing and removing of the extra-large high-efficiency aluminum heatsink does not require any tools as well. Simply push your thumbs down against the two buttons located at the underside of the tray and the heat sink will simply pop out for you to remove. To install it back, you simply cover the tray with the heatsink and with a little downward force, it will snap right back onto the tray.
 
EMI Grounding Technology
 
 
 
Grounding your M.2 is very important through many swaps, to ensure your data and drive are always safe. Without grounding, when swapping drives, there is a high possibility that there may be static shocks, possibly damaging the data on the drive. With our innovative M.2 drive installation design, the adjustable M.2 locker act as a ground and once the M.2 locker clips into the SSD screw hole, the drive will be grounded by the tray and the housing of the enclosure. The grounded connector design protects your drive from static electrical surge, ensuring your data is always safe during drive swapping.

This innovative adjustable M.2 locker slider accommodates all standard M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD drive length including 2230 (30mm), 2242 (42mm), 2260 (60mm), 2280 (80mm), and 22110 (110mm), making this drive tray universal to all drive length and future-proofing the extra-long M.2 drive 22110(110mm).

M.2 NVMe SSDs are notorious for their overheating issue, which can result in performance degradation and transfer speed throttling. We understand this issue and came fully equipped with an extra-large high-efficiency aluminum heatsink installed onto every ToughArmor MB834M2K-B’s tray. Additionally, each ToughArmor MB834M2K-B includes a pair of thermal heat pads to ensure that excessive heat is dispersed thoroughly throughout the entire heatsink.
 
 
 
The heat is further dispersed through the intelligently placed ventilation holes on all sides and working together with your computer cooling system.  The drive remains at optimal operating temperatures even under full load.

The front of the ToughArmor MB834M2K-B includes a status LED when the drive is powered on, off and being accessed.  Active Power Technology (APT) allows the device power to be on only when a SSD is inserted into the enclosure.
 
 
 
For an additional physical layer of security, the large barrel key-lock is implemented to protect against unwanted physical access and to secure drives in place during rough environments, such as military deployments and in-vehicle applications.

Q: I'm connecting my Oculink NVMe PCIe HBA/RAID card to the MB834M2K-B via miniSAS HD (SFF-8643) interface, but the M.2 drives did not show up in my system.

A: The MB834M2K-B are not compatible with the Oculink PCIe HBA/RAID cards due to different connector pin assignments used on the device. Please check the compatibility list in the FAQ section for HBA/RAID cards that are compatible with MB834M2K-B.

Q: I'm using Intel/Broadcom Tri-Mode HBA and RAID cards with the MB834M2K-B, but the drives do not show up in my system.
A: The issue is caused by RAID card manufacturers using a different pin-out for Tri-Mode cards than is typically used for U.2 connections. When using the Tri-Mode cards with M.2 NVMe drives, a U.2 enabler cable must be used for Tri-Mode card to detect the M.2 drive, which reverts the pin-out to standard U.2 specifications. Q: My NVMe drive did not detect after inserting it back into the device while powered on?

 

A: For systems that support hot-plug function, while your system is powered on, each drive insertion and removal cycle will require a manual refresh from the operating system in order for the system to recognize the drive. If you are still unable to detect the drive after performing the manual refresh, please contact us at tech@icydock.com for more assistance.

 

Windows 10 / Windows 8 – In the search box on the taskbar, type Device Manager, then select from the menu, right-click on the disk drive and then select scan for hardware changes.

 

Windows 7 – Right-click on computer icon on desktop and select properties, click Device Manager, right-click on the disk drive and then select scan for hardware changes.

If you are still unable to detect the drive after performing the manual refresh, your system might not support hot-plug functions. We suggest you check with the motherboard/add-on card manufacturer to see if it supports the NVMe hot-plug function.

 


Q: Is the ICY DOCK NVMe enclosure supporting the PCIe 4.0 standard?
A: Yes, all ICY DOCK NVMe enclosures support the PCIe 4.0 standard. However, the bandwidth will be limited to PCIe 3.0 when connecting a PCIe 3.0 device to a PCIe 4.0 host. The PCIe 4.0 enclosures are under development. If you wish to receive product updates, please sign up for the ICY DOCK Newsletter.

Q: I'm having the difficulties closing the lid of the drive tray and unable to insert the drive tray all the way to the drive enclosure after placing the M.2 SSD onto the drive tray.

A: Make sure to lock the M.2 SSD with the adjustable M.2 locker. The tray lid will not close properly if the M.2 locker is not fully secured. If you are having difficulty secure the M.2 locker or close the cover, the M.2 SSD you are using may not follow the standard M.2 SSD thickness, which is less than 1.5mm height for each side with a total height that does not exceed 3.8mm. Using the M.2 SSD with non-standard thickness will cause improper tension on the M.2 locker and tray lid and make the M.2 connector misaligned. If you are having issues inserting the drive tray to the enclosure, please stop the operation immediately and check the drive thickness to ensure it follows the standard M.2 SSD thickness - less than 1.5mm height for each side and less than 3.8mm for total height.

Note: Some M.2 SSD uses a metal heat dissipation sticker that causes each side's thickness more than the 1.5mm. Remove the sticker will solve the problem, but do it at your own risk (might void the warranty of SSD)
