"Performance, as seen in our testing, was quite good, not top notch USB 3.0 performance but solid nonetheless. In RAID 0, I was able to reach 397 MB/s read and 394 MB/s write and switching over to RAID 1 performance was nearly the same at 384 read and 392 write, which is plenty for hard drives."

"The Icy Raid is a External Raid Enclosure Solution from Icy Dock, capable of Raid 0, Raid 1, JBOD and Big modes trough hardware Raid and with a USB 3.0 connection.

The built quality is great as its made of a brushed aluminum enclosure all around. The only plastic found is on the front bay doors as the back is also made of white metal."

"I was impressed with the build quality of these two drive enclosures. They are reasonably durable and should have no issue safely containing drives. Their solid anodized aluminum shells are not bad to look at, either. The ICYRaid has simple hardware RAID features easily selected by a rear panel switch, making configuration a no brainer. The ICYCube only operates as a JBOD unit, meaning those desiring RAID are going to have to rely on software-RAID features of their OS (as well as the corresponding performance hit when using a software RAID through a single external interface link)."

"The Icy Dock offers a lot of value with its aluminum metal enclosure and cooling fan to prevent installed drives from overheating. The aforementioned appearance is good at the price point, though it could be improved with some more premium parts for the front bay doors and the rear panel. The switches are a bit tough to get to, but that's really for the drives' safety and shouldn't be held against Icy Dock. What really stands out though is that by providing users with the ability to configure their drives in RAID modes, performance gains are can be had without shelling out a lot of cash. In RAID 1, users should expect near identical performance to what a single drive would provide, and the HGST drives we installed proved that point. On the other hand, RAID 0 should offer double the performance. In our testing, the drives didn't quite achieve that 2x mark, however they were over 1.5 times quicker. Interfacing over USB 3.0 likely created a bottleneck limiting full enhancement. Overall, the gains in RAID 0 are solid, and the security offered by RAID 1 offers users an inexpensive backup option"

"The Icy Dock ICYRaid MB662U3-2S, unlike other external USB 3.0 enclosures has the hardware capability to run drives in RAID, independent of the PC. The ICYRaid MB662U3-2S replaces the discontinued MB662UEAB-2S which used the older USB 2.0 and FireWire connection with a much faster and more widely used USB 3.0 port. Users can install a pair of two 3.5” HDDs up to 4TB in capacity each for a total of up to 8GB of storage inside the Icy Dock MB662U3-2S. To cool both drives when they are continuously used, the ICYRaid MB662U3-2S is equipped with a 40mm Sunon MAGLev fan that operates silently and can be adjust through a built-in fan controller. Users can configure drives installed inside the MB662U3-2S in RAID 0, RAID 1, BIG, or JBOD just by simply moving the RAID toggle switch and pressing the reset button while the enclosure is on. No further steps are required, other than formatting the drives or adjust the partition when necessary of course. The Icy Dock ICYRAid MB662U3-2S is compatible with either Mac or PC and comes with a three-year limited warranty."

"With the bays open installation of a hard drive is simple. Just slide it in and close the door... perfect and the fact that even the latest SATA3 4TB models are supported is great.

Keeping things super easy ICY DOCK have done well to keep the device configuration to a hardware level. Rather than have to mess about in a BIOS, or application, we simply turn to the back of the unit and move the switches to the mode we want. The ability to enable/disable power LEDs and power saving is a nice bonus and we like that the fan speed can be varied.

We see the benefits of USB 3.0. Even with a single drive the ICYRaid easily exceeds the 35MB/s limit of most USB 2.0 ports by some way. When we combine drives in RAID0 for maximum performance the figures scale nicely and there are few external enclosures which can compete with this speed, flexibility and build quality."

Frequent Asked Questions

Q: What is RAID and what are different mode?

Note: Not all ICY DOCK enclosure support each of the RAID modes described below. For more information on the RAID modes that your enclosure supports, refer to the manual or the icydock.com product page.

Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) is a virtual disk technology that combines multiple physical drives into one unit. RAID can create redundancy, improve performance, or do both.

RAID should not be considered a replacement for backing up your data. If critical data is going onto a RAID array, it should be backed up to another physical drive or logical set of drives.

The following are terms that normally used in connection with RAID:

• Striping: data is split between multiple disks.
• Mirroring: data is mirrored between multiple disks.
• Parity: also referred to as a checksum. Parity is a calculated value used to mathematically rebuild data.

Different RAID levels exist for different application requirements.

Refer to the following table for the list of RAID modes offered by some ICY DOCK products:
RAID MODE Description Operation Advantages Disadvantages Recovery
RAID 0 Striped disks Data is split evenly between two or more disks. Large size and the fastest speed. No redundancy. If one or more drives fails, this results in array failure.
RAID 1 Mirrored disks Two drives have identical data on them. A single drive failure will not result in data loss. Speed and size is limited by the slowest and smallest disk. Only one drive is needed for recovery.
JBOD Just a Bunch Of Disks Any number of drives are accessed independently by the operating system. Software RAID modes can be used. Hardware RAID may have better performance. N/A
BIG Spanning or Concatenation Data is written on one drive until it is full, and then the next drive(s) until it or they are full. Creates a very large and simple array. No redundancy. N/A

Q: How do I setup or change the RAID mode for my MB662U3-2S R1 USB 3.0 RAID Enclosure?

Note: Any data currently on the drives will be lost during this process. You need to back up all of your data before you set a RAID mode.

To set a RAID mode, complete the following:

1. Turn off the enclosure.
2. Use a USB 3.0 cable to connect the MB662U3-2S R1 enclosure to a computer.
3. Set the RAID switch to the RAID mode that you want to set.
4. Turn on the enclosure.
5. When the computer is turned on, check disk management to see if your RAID array is listed. If the RAID array listed with unallocated space, the RAID array needs to be reformatted.

Note 1: When you change the RAID mode, complete the steps above to set the unit back to JBOD before you set a different RAID mode.

Note 2: You can use the RAID monitoring software to verify the RAID model status. The RAID monitoring software can be downloaded here.

Q: How do I rebuild my RAID 1 array?

1. Determine which drive is operational by using the RAID monitoring software (if available) or test each drive individually on a different hard drive enclosure or by connecting each drive directly to a computer’s SATA port.
2. Replace the failed drive with an identical hard drive.
3. The array will rebuild and is accessible during the rebuilding process at a slow speed.

Note 1: It is recommended to use a new identical hard drive for the rebuild. To use a used drive, we recommend use Window’s DiskPart command to clean and format the used hard drive before you start rebuilding.

Note 2: Before you start the rebuilding process, make sure the replacement drive has no previous RAID table in it. To erase the RAID table created by MB662U3-2S R1, turn off the enclosure, insert the drive into the MB662U3-2S R1 and set the RAID switch to JBOD mode and then turn on the enclosure. The RAID table will be erased once you successfully switch to JBOD mode. This procedure deletes all of the data on the drives. Make sure you back up all your data before you switch to JBOD mode.

Note 3: For better data security, when creating RAID 1 array, the JMS562 RAID chipset saves the RAID table to a deep layer (LBA) of the drive, which can only be erased by JMS562 chipset (MB662U3-2S R1) in JBOD mode. Therefore, we recommend wiping the RAID table before you reuse any drive that ever used in MB662U3-2S R1 with RAID 1 array.

Q: How can I check if my USB device is properly detected by Mac OS?

To confirm that the Mac OS detects your USB device, complete the following:

Verify that the device appears in System Information: Choose Apple menu > About This Mac. In the window that appears, click Overview, then click the System Report button to open System Information. In the window that appears, see if the USB device is listed below Hardware in the list on the left.

You may need to refresh the System Information page after you plug in your device. To do so, press Command R with the System Information page open.

Your USB device is listed according to the name of the chipset. To determine the name of the chipset of your USB device, navigate to www.icydock.com and look on the Technical Specifications tab for your product.

Q: Will my hard drive or solid-state drive work in this enclosure?

• Make sure that the enclosure supports the storage size of your hard drive. If the storage size of your hard drive is larger than what the enclosure was tested with, the hard drive will likely still work with the enclosure.
• Confirm that your hard drive uses the same interface type as the enclosure. For example, IDE, SATA, or SAS.
• Make sure that the enclosure supports the physical size of your hard drive, such as 2.5 inches drive or 3.5 inches drive.
• Make sure that the enclosure supports the height of your hard drive. For example, 7mm, 9 mm or 15 mm.
• Verify that the power consumption of your hard drive doesn’t exceed the power output of the enclosure. If you’re using multiple hard drives, make sure that the combined power consumption of all of the hard drives doesn’t exceed the power output of the enclosure.

Q: Everything is connected, but nothing is working. What do I do?

When you troubleshoot issues with a hard drive enclosure, there are some quick tests that you can complete to rule out potential problems. You can test to make sure that the following components are working correctly and are not the source of the issue:
• Cables (USB, SATA, SAS, Mini-SAS, etc)
• Hard drives / SSD (M.2 drive, 3.5'' hard drive, solid state drive, etc)
• Hard drive enclosure (converter, mobile rack, cage, and external enclosure)

To test your setup components, try the following:
• Connect the hard drive directly to the system or use the hard drive in another enclosure to see if the problem is with the hard drive.
• Use the cables, hard drives, and hard drive enclosure in another setup to see if the problem is with the components or the setup.
• Use a different cable, hard drive, and hard drive enclosure in your setup to see if the problem persists. Ideally, you should test a component that you know works in another setup.

When you test the hard drive and hard drive enclosure, it is recommended that you do the following:
• To check Disk Management, press the Windows key + R, type diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. Check to see if your hard drive is listed.
• If the hard drive is listed with unallocated space, the hard drive needs to be reformatted. Right-click unallocated and click New Simple Volume. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reformatting.

Note: Formatting a hard drive erases all of the data on it. Make sure that you back up all of your data before you reformat the hard drive.
• If the hard drive is listed as healthy but does not have a drive letter, for example, C:, right-click healthy and click Change Drive Letter and Paths. Click Add, assign a drive letter, and click OK.

Note: A formatted hard drive will not show up in Computer or My Computer until it has a drive letter assigned to it.
