A Smarter Way to Chia Farm with ICY DOCK Enclosure
Date: 2021.10.19

Before understanding Chia Coin, It is important to know what is Cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrency is digital/virtual money designed to be used over the internet with almost no human intervention and is designed to be decentralized due to its Blockchain. Bitcoin (BTC), the first cryptocurrency released in 2008, makes its influence as a proof of concept, and its popularity results in the introduction of other Blockchain-based coins such as Ethereum (ETH), Ripple (XRP), and of course the meme coin, Dogecoin (DOGE). While it is almost impossible to predict its future value and usage, mentions of its attributes come from the news-press, highlighting several competing cryptos, cost of production, market caps, and more.

What is Chia Coin?

No, not the edible seed. A slightly better one. Chia (short for Chialisp) is an improved blockchain and smart transactional platform, launched in 2017. It's new programming language makes it powerful, secure, easy to use, and continuously adapting to new cryptographic tools to improve like no other.

What is Chia Farming?

Chia farm loads “a secret code” known as cryptographic numbers into storage drives such as HDDs/SSDs and seed a temporary portion of the capacity known as a plot. In return, you will receive rewards in chia coins for helping secure the blockchain. An added benefit for Farming, as opposed to mining, would be it does not require upfront expensive hardware and more environmentally friendly.

As Chia Farming has been on the rise in recent months and making a big impact in the storage industry, Seeking viable means to managing multiple drives are crucial, especially to those who have a few to many farming rigs or even just moving one plot to another to make a bigger plot.

In this new farming industry requirements, it is suggested to have two farming computers – one for rapid plots and one for slow plots. But why two? There are pros and cons between the two. Having a rapid plotting rig means you will use [SATA/NVMe] SSDs.  This setup can perform plots more rapidly but the downside of this method would be adding extreme wear to drives, limited capacity, and usually the cost per gigabyte is higher than traditional 3.5” HDDs. As for slower plot rigs, using 3.5” hard drives, it is expected to have consistent plots, high capacity, and of course less wear to your drives, at the expense of plot completion rates.

It is recommended to have a high-density drive storage enclosure to provide room for plotting without the concern of running out of storage for any type of chia farming rigs. With ICY DOCK storage enclosures and accessories, we provide an endless solution to provide ease of data management for all types of applications.

For fast storage, it is recommended to use SSDs as plotting requires intensive writing of creating constant random data, sorting, and compression.
