The MB994SP-4SB-1 allows for many more users to use this backplane in their homes with the reduced cost. The dual 40mm cooling fans to in addition to the power switch for the fans allow for the best flexibility – Turn off when using SSD’s and on when using mechanical SATA hard drives. Furthermore, this device utilizes Active Power Technology, so that the device only power up if there are drives installed.

And featuring a full cage design, the added top drive cover provides added protection while moving the drive. The trays are also designed to accommodate 5mm, 7mm, 9.5mm, 12.5mm & 15mm drives giving you the ultimate universal 2.5" hot swap bay.

Utilizing its small form factor, the MB994SP-4SB-1 is perfect for use in gaming PCs, small form factor cases where 5.25” bays are limited and large drive capacity or SSD’s are needed. This also will benefit compact RAID 5 systems. It is built to function in the most demanding environments including military and law enforcement deployment, as well as manufacturing conditions such as embedded control systems and factory automation systems. The rugged heavy metal design makes it ideal for placement in tough environments.

Prevent Server Drive Ejection From User Error with ToughArmor MB994SK-1B

When working with workstations, databases, and/or servers that requires front-loading, sometimes hard drives may be accidentally ejected by an inadvertent push of the eject button. This can cause failures to the system. With the ToughArmor MB994SK-1B 4 x 2.5" SATA/SAS HDD/SSD Full Metal Mobile Rack with Key Lock, the additional security lock on each drive tray not only protects the hard drive from being easily stolen, it also prevents accidental drive ejections that lead to system crashes. But you already have a MB994SP-4S, MB994SP-4SB-1, or MB994IPO-3SB and want a lock for preventative measures? Simply obtain the EZ Slide Mini Tray MB994TK-B and slide it into your MB994 series products and you now have extra protection for your hard drives!

Install Icy Dock MB994SP-4SB-1 in HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen9

After finishing up work on my ML10v2 I wanted to move back to the HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen9 and begin testing to eventually configure it as a workhorse in my home lab. First I wanted a way to be able to easily add 2.5” drives (from thin SSD’s but including up to the 15mm VelociRaptor’s – what’s a home lab without VelociRaptor’s I always say J). The ML30 Gen 9 (Product No. 830893) has 6 SATA III (6Gb/s) ports with 4 (ports 1 -4) to the LFF hot-swap cage via a mini-SAS cable from the System Board and ports 5 & 6 available as SATA III (6Gb/s) on the System Board all controlled by the embedded B140i on the system board. While I only had 2 extra SATA ports I also wanted some future expandability if I decided to move to an add-on controller card. I felt that the Icy Dock 4-in-1 ToughArmor MB994SP-4SB-1 would best fit my “want’s”.

"Overall, I am just as pleased with the MB994SP-4SB-1 and MB991SK-B as I was with the MB994IPO-3SB a little over a year ago. I feel that they are both high quality units that fit the requirements of their intended audience. I'd have no qualms recommending either to a friend or colleague.

The units have an excellent fit and finish and would be an excellent way to house a high-performance RAID SSD setup, or act as a convenient component for off-site backup."

"Icy Dock’s line of 5.25” backplanes retains its emphasis on usability, durability, and interoperability with the latest MB994SP-4SB-1. This cage builds on the previous generation of Icy Dock cages and enclosures by focusing on utility and offering small enhancements like its fan power switch and the reduction to one power connection."

“On the whole I am very impressed with the MB994SP-4SB-1 and would certainly recommend it along with any other Icy Dock product if its suits the needs of any particular user and for around £45/$70, its build quality and functionality is well worth every penny /cent.”

"The IcyDock MB994SP-4SB-1 looks well made and is a compact and convenient way to mount four 2.5" SATA hard drives/solid state drives in one spare 5.25" bay. Given that optical drives are going the way of the Dodo, it's good to know older PC cases can be upgraded to keep up with technologies advances. The IcyDock MB994SP-4SB-1 four-bay 2.5-inch SATA hard drive rack is well worth considering"

"Icy Dock comes through once again with a high-quality storage solution. HDD prices have started to normalize closer to pre-flood levels and SSD prices are becoming more and more affordable as the 4th generation offerings are about to come in, so users looking for extra storage will have plenty of options available to them. The MB994SP-4SB-1 could simplify things even further, especially for system builders who need to swap out multiple drives constantly."

Frequent Asked Questions

Q: The mounting screws for the device seem to be too short to secure the device onto my system, what should I do?

A: For computer cases that have a thick metal sheet, the included mounting screws (M3*2.5L) may not fully secure the device. Please use longer screws (M3*4L) to secure the device or contact us at tech@icydock.com for replacement screws.

Q: I feel that the drive tray's upper and lower metal spring is stuck when inserting the drive tray. What should I do?
A: Remove the drive tray from the enclosure and reinsert the tray without putting excessive pressure on the metal mesh sheet in front of the tray. Excessive force on the front metal mesh sheet may bend the top and bottom metal spring, causing difficulties when inserting the drive tray. Therefore, please do not forcingly insert the drive tray when this happens as it may cause damage to the metal spring.
