Hard drive failure is the reality to prepare for. In the long run, you will have to face the certainty that all hard drives fail no matter how cautious you have been. Imagine what would happen if the drive fails and you lost all of your family photos, critical office data, and your work portfolio? To prevent the data loss from a hard drive failure, our response is the ICYRaid enclosure to make the user experience of creating a physical backup (RAID array) a very pleasant one. The ICYRaid series MB662U3-2S packs the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface, tray-less drive installation design, easy to setup process, and an advanced cooling system - all these great features in a small, yet elegant enclosure that can be taken where you go as a professional media storage device.
User Friendly Design
The ICYRaid is a self contained hardware dual bay RAID enclosure that operates independent of your computer. Along with an easy to use control panel, setting up the device is a simple thing to do. By using the rear control panel, the MB662U3-2S can be used to create various RAID arrays such as: RAID 1(SAFE), RAID 0 (FAST), BIG, and JBOD for different use cases.
2 drives work independently
2 drives combined to a maximum drive space
2 drives combined, striping the files for maximum speed & capacity
Automatic back up for maximum data security
Installing and maintaining the MB662U3-2S requires no extra tools, as everything you will need is included. The ICYRaid uses our convenient tray-less design to simply make any install a seamless transition to getting your configuration started. Once you have your hard drives ready, simply open each door, slide in your hard drives, and select the RAID setting you like. After that, turning on the device will automatically start the RAID process on its own. If a failure of a drive occurs, easy to read front LED indicators will indicate when a drive is ejected, accessed, or has failed. The ICYRaid MB662U3-2S adds two convenient features, LED and power control. The front LED indicators can be disabled when needed. This is perfect for people who set the enclosure in their bedroom and prefer turn the LED off at night. The second feature is the power saving mode that follows your systems behavior. When your system is powered off or put to sleep, the ICYRaid will activate its sleep mode to conserve power. Both these functions can be changed via dip switches on the rear panel.
Taking advantage of the new ultra quick USB 3.0 interface, users will be able to transfer at high speeds at a maximum of 5 Gbps. The USB 3.0 interface is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0, so using the MB662U3-2S on your legacy PC or Mac is not a problem. If the system supports USB 3.0, you will be able to take advantage of the superior performance capabilities – which is crucial for professionals who want tools that perform their jobs quickly and efficiently.
Supreme Build Quality for Maximum Reliability
It is known that the most common causes of disk failure are poor heat management and mechanical agitation. Taking this into consideration, the build of the MB662U3-2S uses solid aluminum body construction, adding heat dissipation, strength, and protection of your hard drives. The ICYRaid MB662U3-2S in addition reduces external vibrations from reaching the sensitive hard disks by enclosing the drive within a vibration reducing cage, minimizing the possibility of disk damage.
Protecting your data also requires that it is constantly maintained to perform at its best. Because hard drives are susceptible to heat failure, it is important to have an active cooling solution. Using the ultra-quiet Sunon MagLev 40mm fan with variable fan speed control ensures optimal heat dissipation or quiet operation for a range of applications such as a recording studio or production room.

"I was impressed with the build quality of these two drive enclosures. They are reasonably durable and should have no issue safely containing drives. Their solid anodized aluminum shells are not bad to look at, either. The ICYRaid has simple hardware RAID features easily selected by a rear panel switch, making configuration a no brainer. The ICYCube only operates as a JBOD unit, meaning those desiring RAID are going to have to rely on software-RAID features of their OS (as well as the corresponding performance hit when using a software RAID through a single external interface link)."
"I really like the Icy Dock in so many ways; the design has been thought out and everything just works. The Icy Dock is aimed at users who want fast external storage, combined into a unit that is sleek, subtle and well designed and on all counts the Icy Dock delivers. It is compatible with both PC and Mac and even comes with a 3 year warranty for peace of mind."
"The Icy Dock offers a lot of value with its aluminum metal enclosure and cooling fan to prevent installed drives from overheating. The aforementioned appearance is good at the price point, though it could be improved with some more premium parts for the front bay doors and the rear panel. The switches are a bit tough to get to, but that's really for the drives' safety and shouldn't be held against Icy Dock. What really stands out though is that by providing users with the ability to configure their drives in RAID modes, performance gains are can be had without shelling out a lot of cash. In RAID 1, users should expect near identical performance to what a single drive would provide, and the HGST drives we installed proved that point. On the other hand, RAID 0 should offer double the performance. In our testing, the drives didn't quite achieve that 2x mark, however they were over 1.5 times quicker. Interfacing over USB 3.0 likely created a bottleneck limiting full enhancement. Overall, the gains in RAID 0 are solid, and the security offered by RAID 1 offers users an inexpensive backup option"
"The Icy Dock ICYRaid MB662U3-2S, unlike other external USB 3.0 enclosures has the hardware capability to run drives in RAID, independent of the PC. The ICYRaid MB662U3-2S replaces the discontinued MB662UEAB-2S which used the older USB 2.0 and FireWire connection with a much faster and more widely used USB 3.0 port. Users can install a pair of two 3.5” HDDs up to 4TB in capacity each for a total of up to 8GB of storage inside the Icy Dock MB662U3-2S. To cool both drives when they are continuously used, the ICYRaid MB662U3-2S is equipped with a 40mm Sunon MAGLev fan that operates silently and can be adjust through a built-in fan controller. Users can configure drives installed inside the MB662U3-2S in RAID 0, RAID 1, BIG, or JBOD just by simply moving the RAID toggle switch and pressing the reset button while the enclosure is on. No further steps are required, other than formatting the drives or adjust the partition when necessary of course. The Icy Dock ICYRAid MB662U3-2S is compatible with either Mac or PC and comes with a three-year limited warranty."
"With the bays open installation of a hard drive is simple. Just slide it in and close the door... perfect and the fact that even the latest SATA3 4TB models are supported is great.
Keeping things super easy ICY DOCK have done well to keep the device configuration to a hardware level. Rather than have to mess about in a BIOS, or application, we simply turn to the back of the unit and move the switches to the mode we want. The ability to enable/disable power LEDs and power saving is a nice bonus and we like that the fan speed can be varied.
We see the benefits of USB 3.0. Even with a single drive the ICYRaid easily exceeds the 35MB/s limit of most USB 2.0 ports by some way. When we combine drives in RAID0 for maximum performance the figures scale nicely and there are few external enclosures which can compete with this speed, flexibility and build quality."
